RCR Wireless Interview: Scalability and Flexibility at the Edge
To support processing and storage at the edge, operators need hardware that is scalable, cost effective and flexible. The requirements are variable, driven by a wide range of environments and performance targets. In this conversation, we talk about how hardware designed for the edge can meet these challenges with Paul Stevens at Advantech.

Real Time 8K HEVC Encoder Card for Virtual Reality and 360 Video Applications
Next generation services are outstripping the processing capability of many infrastructure elements, being the load of 8K HEVC encoding more than 40X that of Full HD AVC. But it is not only about resolution. New formats such as 360o video or virtual reality multiply the amount of video information that needs to be processed at any given time. The ultra-low power VEGA-3304 encoder accelerator plans for these new requirements, being able to efficiently perform up to 8Kp60 acquisition and real-time HEVC encoding or cope with up to sixteen 1080p60 channels in a single PCI Express card. In addition to this impressive encoding performance, the VEGA-3304 add-on accelerator can be easily integrated into a server IT-based media processing application through the PCI Express bus which reduces in-house development efforts and time to market of next generation UHD and VR services.

New Opportunities and System Solutions for Mobile Edge Computing
Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) enables developers and providers with computing capabilities at the edge of the mobile network where applications can leverage ultra-low latency, high bandwidth and real-time access to the radio network. One of the challenges of opening up the mobile edge to new players is the creation of an interoperable ecosystem. In this presentation, Tim Epkes from Brocade and Paul Stevens from Advantech discuss the new opportunities at the mobile edge, the MEC ecosystem and the ETSI MEC PoC #7 that provides a single, unified infrastructure, NFV-O, and could orchestration system with the ability to support multiple MEC platforms and applications running on a shared and common computing infrastructure, each providing a unique value-add on the traffic traversing platform. This multivendor solution was demonstrated at MEC World Congress 2016 and involves different MEC partners including Brocade, Cloudify, Saguna, Vasona and Advantech. TelecomTV: Ecosystem Collaboration to Enable the NFV Edge
Advantech has been busy collaborating with partners to enable the NFV network ‘edge’. In this feature Paul Stevens, Marketing Director for the Networks & Communications Group at Advantech, explains the company’s strategy and, with the help of partner representatives, he outlines three important recent moves. First, a ‘proof of concept’ demo at Mobile Edge Computing Congress in Munich with Brocade. Then, Advantech and Wind River announced the expansion of their remote evaluation services platform, which allows remote testing of Wind River Titanium Edge Server, edge devices. That means service providers can easily start development on edge devices for remote locations. Then Advantech announced its participation in Versa Networks SD-WAN white box ecosystem, which gives SPs a wider choice of platforms and allows them to quickly deploy zero touch provisioning services.
